Safety reps part 1 and 2

This is a two-part programme lasting six days that will help you succeed as a safety rep. The focus is on practical activity and understanding (and applying) legislation.

Introduction

This course is designed to introduce to the rights, duties and responsibilities of Union Safety Representatives so that you can act effectively on behalf of BECTU members.

The course is organised in two  blocks of 3 days, typically a month apart, to facilitate time off work to attend. Attendance on both courses earns accreditation from the Open College Network and a BECTU Certificate, and two parts combine to be the equivalent of the TUC Stage 1 course.

Key Learning Outcomes
  • Have greater knowledge of UK health and safety legislation
  • Understand the role of the Safety Rep
  • Be aware of your legal rights and responsibilities
  • Be able to identify hazards
  • Be confident in carrying out safety inspections
  • Understand the risk assessment process
  • Develop your communication and problem solving skills

In broad terms the course deals with the rights and responsibilities of safet reps in part 1 and with substantive legislation (e.g. risk assessment, workplace regulations etc.) in part 2. This means that part 1 is most suitable for reps working for employers where there is union recognition and part 2 is useful for freelance members.
