This one-day course is designed to welcome you as a BECTU representative and introduce you to the work of the union and its active members.
Introduction
When you volunteer to help BECTU as a union rep or activist you are entitled to the specialist knowledge and skills you need to carry out your role - without waiting too long. You don't have to be a newly-appointed rep to attend, well-established reps who want to find out a little more are very welcome, as are members who are thinking about volunteering to help BECTU at your workplace.
This course will cover the following:
- All about BECTU the union
- What are unions for?
- What do unions do?
- BECTU's structure
- BECTU's organising agenda
- The rights and responsibilities of reps and activists
Key Learning Outcomes
When you have completed this course you will have learned:
- How BECTU is organised and what it does
- What the role of the rep is
- What the law says about the rights of union reps
- That you are part of a national community of reps similar to yourself

The resources for this course will include the approved code of practice from the Advice Conciliation and Arbitration Service which outlines the legal rights for union reps to be allowed time off for duties, activities and training
