The old trade union 'slogan' declares 'Educate, agitate and organise' and this sums up our short course quite well! You will learn the skills and techniques of organising and recruiting to make BECTU strong and relevant.

Introduction

The 'Building the Organised Workplace' course is part of the core programme of courses for BECTU branch officers, stewards, and workplace reps. These courses deal with the four core areas of union activity - 'representing', 'communicating', 'negotiating' and this one, 'organising'.

The course is designed to help you make the most of your rights as a BECTU rep to build a strong and active union organisation. You will develop the skills and knowledge to be able to organise both yourself and your workplace. You will learn how to recruit and retain members by making meetings more interesting and learning how to take up everyday issues and resolve them. This course is best run locally at branch level for 8-10 people - if you would like this course to be run for you and your colleagues please contact Brian Kelly.

This course will cover the following:

  • What does it mean to be organised?
  • What is supposed to happen at committees & meetings?
  • How to organise meetings that members what to go to!
  • Making policy in BECTU
  • Introduction to the 'Organising Model of unions'
  • Recruiting new members and keeping them.
  • Organising campaigns around workplace issues
Key Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course you will:

  • Know how to run union meetings more effectively
  • Understand the techniques of organising
  • Be a more confident recruiter of new members
