BECTU courses

BECTU rep's courses will give you the skills and knowledge you need to support BECTU members and help make your own workplace a better and fairer place to work.

BECTU courses are run in partnership with the TUC and tailored to suit our own industrial and working environment. The are informal and democratic with an emphasis on discussion and sharing experiences. You will return to work with greater confidence and new skills. 

         Negotiating course at Ruskin College

one day Induction
This one-day course is designed to welcome you as a BECTU representative and introduce you to the work of the union and its active members.
Representing your Members
Everybody needs help at work sometime - this course will show you how to support and represent your fellow BECTU members effectively.
Negotiation skills
This course is about how to negotiate effectively with your employers and more widely. You will learn the 'tricks of the trade' - how to prepare your case, how to bargain and how to win.

Building the Organised Workplace
The old trade union 'slogan' declares 'Educate, agitate and organise' and this sums up our short course quite well! You will learn the skills and techniques of organising and recruiting to make BECTU strong and relevant.

Effective Communication Skills
Effective communication skills are essential for union reps and activists. Here you will learn to get your ideas across and be persuasive both verbally and in writing.

Safety reps part 1 and 2
This is a two-part programme lasting six days that will help you succeed as a safety rep. The focus is on practical activity and understanding (and applying) legislation.

Union Learning Reps Induction
This programme of training will help you learn all you need to be able to carry out the role of Union Learning Representative.
Introduction to employment law
This an introduction to individual and collective legal rights at work. You will learn about contracts, redundancy, TUPE and some anti-discrimination law.
