Lifelong Learning

These pages give you information about what is often called 'Lifelong Learning' - this means any learning you undertake as an adult for whatever reason. It might vocational or for pleasure, leisure or simply the desire to learn. You define what it means - but here we provide some links and information to get you started!

How to use this section

Although many BECTU members (and Learning Reps advising them) using this site will be interested in vocational training for career development, we understand that many others will be interested in education for other reasons. This might include, career switching, leisure and interest or simply a desire to achieve a qualification at a higher level.

This section contains information about education and training providers (especially colleges and universities), qualifications and how they work, information about subjects and topics of study. We try to provide answers about  'who, what and where' but leave the 'why' up to you!

The contents of this section

On the left hand column there are a number of sub-sections listed dealing with different aspects of adult education and training.

The section entitled Learning and Skills Sector carries information about Further Education Colleges, private training providers and the Adult and Community Education sector which inludes providers like the Workers Educational Association (WEA). This sector provides and funds education and training for adults outside university. The offer qualifications accredited and awarded by external awarding bodies such as City & Guilds.

The section dealing with Higher Education (Universities etc.) carries information about universities and university colleges. These organisations have the status and power to accredit and award their own qualifications at undergraduate and postgraducate levels.

The Online Learning section contains links to online learning providers and online courses - but please read our guidance before signing up to anything online!

Finally, we provide some Qualifications because this is an area of massive confusion and rapid change - but they are at the heart of the government skills strategy and are vital for career development - so greater understanding is vital for us all!
