Getting started
As ULRs are a relatively new idea it is sometimes more difficult to identify exactly what to do especially when employers are not particularly supportive or where learning and skills have a low priority. This page will help get you started at a pace and at a level that suits you!
4 steps to get you started!
1. The very first thing you should do is to find out a little more about the ULR role.
You can do this by:
- Contacting a member of the Education and Training team at BECTU, Brian Kelly Training Officer, Kate Elliott Learning Project Manager, Yvonne Smith Learning Organiser all based at Head Office and John Crumpton based in Manchester
- Explore this section of BECTUlearning especially the section with case studies of BECTU ULRs
- Visit the TUC's website at http://www.unionlearn.org.uk/
2. The second thing you need to do is to think about your own personal situation at work.
If you do become a ULR you will need to attend union a training course and you will need to be able to relate well to union members, non-members and management. You will also need to be in a position to organise your time effectively. We can help and advise you with this.
3. The third thing you need to do is talk to your colleagues at work and meet up with any other BECTU reps that work in your workplace/department.
As a ULR you will be the same as other BECTU reps in that you will have to be supported and nominated by your local union branch or shop. Remember that as a representative you will be a member of the local reps team and will be expected to make reports about your work - you may also need to attend union meetings.
4. The fourth thing you need to do is make the decision and start work
- Once you have decided that you want to be a ULR (and it will be a very rewarding thing for you to do), please email us at one of the addresses above as soon as you can so that we can arrange for you to attend a training course.
- Please explore this section of the website and download your ULR 'starter pack'
- We will write to your management confirming your appointment and supply you with a letter to union members informing them of your appointment and explaining your role.
- As part of the training programme we will support you to carry out a range of activities that will help you to find out what your members want (in terms of education and training) and how to help them get it
